About Chris Whittington

Early Musical Roots:
Chris Whittington grew up surrounded by music. With both parents steeped in the classical tradition, the family record collection was filled with symphonies—plus just three Beatles albums, which he assumed every household owned. That mix of structure and creativity shaped his early curiosity about sound. With help from his older brother, Chris soon discovered the wide world beyond classical music and began exploring new styles and instruments.

Education and Training:
Chris started on piano, then joined the school band in sixth grade, where he played clarinet, marched in the drumline, and even served as drum major. Around that same time, guitar took hold as his greatest passion. By high school, he was performing with the jazz band and experimenting with different genres. He went on to study at Appalachian State University under Dr. Douglas James in the guitar ensemble, learning classical fingerstyle technique, and with Andy Page, exploring jazz guitar. At ASU, he also pursued recording and production with Professor Scott Wynne, blending his love for rock and pop into studio projects.

Professional Experience:
After returning to Atlanta in 2008, Chris worked in several local recording studios and performed across the city at venues including The Masquerade, Smith’s Olde Bar, and Vinyl at Center Stage. His diverse background as both performer and producer gives him a broad perspective on musicianship and creativity.

Teaching and Style:
Now part of the teaching team at Firehouse Guitars & Music, Chris offers lessons in guitar, ukulele, beginning piano, and computer recording. With an emphasis on music appreciation and creativity, he helps students connect with the joy of making music—no matter their age or experience level. Chris teaches on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Firehouse Guitars & Music in Decatur, GA.
